The next morning I went over to Maritza’s to talk to her. I found her in the bathroom.
“Are you ok?”
“Yeah, just a little morning sickness,” she said.
“Congratulations,” I said as I felt her baby bump. “Baby number four!”
“Actually, babies four, five, and six. Found out at my last appointment that I am having triplets.
“Wow, that’s amazing,” I said. “If you need any help you know where to find me.”
“That I do,” she said with a laugh. “So what did you want to talk about?”
“So last night at the party Donavon kissed me. I am not sure if it was because he wanted to or because we were standing under the mistletoe.”
“Oh he wanted to kiss you.”
“How do you know.”
“Because he was standing under that mistletoe for 20 minutes waiting for you to come downstairs.”
“He was just being polite. He wanted to say goodbye before he left.”
“Yeah but Ethan saw him standing there and told him you were upstairs putting Fletcher to bed. Ethan told Donavon he could go upstairs and say goodbye if he wanted. Or that he could come back into the living room and wait where he would be more comfortable. Ethan said that Donavon told him he was fine waiting right where he was. Ethan swears he saw Donavon glance up at the mistletoe as he said it. So he was purposely waiting under that mistletoe for you. He wanted an excuse to kiss you.”
“I don’t know what I should do now. Should I ask him about it? Tell him I liked the kiss? Ask him out on a date?”
“I think you just need an opportunity to see him again. Why don’t you invite him to Fletcher’s birthday party next week.”
“Oh, I know. It is Gloria’s birthday next week too. How about I make a cake for her too and we can celebrate her birthday. I better start planning.”
Soon it was time for Fletcher’s birthday. I can’t believe he is going to be a teenager. He is such a great kid and I am so proud of him.
Everyone noticed that I had made two cakes and finally someone asked who is the other cake for?
“I made that for Gloria,” I said.
“Really?” Donavan asked. “You didn’t have to do that.”
“I know but I wanted to. She is such a wonderful girl. She deserved a fun party.”
After the party I walked Donavon and Gloria to the door.
“Thank you so much for doing this for her, for us,” he said.
Donavon pulled me into a hug. As he released me he asked, “Will you go out on a date with me?”
“I would love to,” I said.
“I just found out that have to go out of town for a medical conference but how about when I get back. I will be back on Thursday. We can go out then?”
“Sounds great,” I said. “Oh, if you haven’t already made arrangements for Gloria she can stay here while you are gone.”
“That would be helpful. I found out just before the party that I was being sent to the conference, I was hoping Gloria could stay with you – she loves you and Fletcher. I was going to ask earlier but then you surprised us with the party and everything just slipped my mind.”
“She is more than welcome. In fact if she wants to just stay here tonight that is fine. I think I have some of my old clothes that would fit her. That way you don’t need to come back in the morning to drop her off before you leave for the airport.”
“That would be great, thanks.”
I made up my childhood room for Gloria and Fletcher even offered to read her a bedtime story.
The next morning Fletcher took Gloria to school. I have a whole new group of toddlers now. They are all adorable and a lot of fun. We had story time and played with blocks.
On little boy missed his mom and cried for awhile but a few snuggles and a visit from the tickle monster and he calmed down.
When Fletcher got home he helped feed all the daycare kids.
Later I helped Gloria with her homework. She is a very smart girl and barely needed any help from me.
The next morning I got up early and tended to the garden. No one has really done much with it in years.
I pulled out all the old dead plants and replanted everything. I knew I couldn’t keep up with a garden as big as the one my great great great grandmother Anna Equidae had so I made the garden area smaller. I still think it is a nice size and I have been happy with the crops I have been getting.
I also relocated the family grave sites from under the willow try to a nice fenced in area behind the barn. I planted some flowers next to each grave.
It happened to be a holiday so the kids didn’t have school. So for lunch I took Fletcher and Gloria to the park to met Maritza, Ethan and their kids for a picnic.
After lunch Fletcher played with Gloria on the teeter totters. He will make such a great big brother some day. That is if I ever have kids. Maybe I should think about adopting again.
Maritza had to leave the park early to go home and rest. She is getting closer to her due date and with triplets she tires easily.
The kids had so much fun at the park they were exhausted when we got home and went to bed early. I was just thinking of doing the same when my phone rang.
*Ring Ring *
“Hey, Fionna, it’s Donavon. I was able to get an earlier flight and I was wondering if it was ok if I came over and picked up Gloria.”
“Oh, she is asleep.”
“Really? It is only 7 pm.”
“Yeah I know. We spent the entire day at the park. All that sun and fresh air and Gloria and Fletcher were both exhausted. I hate to wake her.”
“Can I take you out instead? Fletcher is old enough to watch Gloria if either of them wake up.”
“Ok, sure that sounds nice.”
“Meet me at the Spring Festival in 15 minutes.”
“See you there.”
I left a note for Fletcher and then headed to the festival grounds. When I arrived Donavon was waiting for me with flowers. We played some games though neither one of us was interested in the kissing booth.
A band was playing some nice slow music.
“May I have this dance?” Donavon asked.
“It would be my pleasure,” I responded.
Turns out Donavon is great dancer. It was so romantic dancing in the moonlight.
All of a sudden there was this huge commotion going on near the picnic tables. Turns out some lady was having chest pains.
Being the excellent doctor that he is Donavon ran to assist while I called for an ambulance. Turns out the lady was having a heart attack. When the ambulance arrived Donavon decided he should go to the hospital with her. He apologized for cutting our date short and we made plans to go out again tomorrow night.
The next night Donavon brought Gloria back over to the house (Fletcher offered to babysit) and he picked me up for out date. It was a nice night so we decided to leave Donavon’s car at the house and go for a walk before dinner.
We walked to a nice restaurant/bar. We enjoyed a great meal and shared a bottle of wine. While we ate Donavon filled me in on the lady from the festival. He couldn’t go into a lot of details but he did let me know that she was still alive and recovering well. The restaurant happened to be doing a Karaoke night and some how I let Donavon convince me to get up their and sing with him. We did a rendition of Sonny and Cher’s I got you babe. It was a lot of fun.
After dinner we walked back to my house. Gloria was asleep so Donavon decided to just leave her here and pick her up the next day after school. After he said goodnight he pulled me into his arms and kissed me.
I returned the kiss and really wanted to invite him inside and ask him to stay the night. But I didn’t know what either of the kids would think if they saw Donavon there in the middle of the night. Plus it might be old fashion but I think I want to be married before I take that step with someone. I am really hoping that someone will be Donavon. I am pretty sure I am falling in love with him.
